Staff continues to work throughout the city to clear streets of down trees and other debris. As the storm passes, please use extreme caution, more outages, trees and powerlines down and road debris are possible.

If you encounter road blockages or high water on the roads, please call 803-436-2558. In case of an emergency, call 911.

Portions of the city are beginning to experience power outages.
 
Stay in if you can. But if you have to drive, remember the rules of the road to navigate a traffic signal that is flashing or completely out.

WHO DO YOU CALL — To Report a Power Outage?
 
Duke Energy and Black River Electric Cooperative have each posted information for customers to report power outages as remnants of Hurricane Ian affect our area.
Please report outages to your power provider. Call 911 in an emergency, which includes a medical emergency associated with an outage, fire hazard, etc.
 
DUKE ENERGY:
 
(Before the storm hits, customers should text REG to 57801 to ensure they are registered to receive text updates about outages that may impact them.)
 
Outages can be reported in the following ways:
- Text OUT to 57801 (standard text and data charges may apply).
- Visit duke-energy.com on a desktop computer or mobile device.
- Use the Duke Energy mobile app – Download the Duke Energy App from a smartphone via Apple Store or Google Play.
- Call the automated outage-reporting system, at: 800.POWERON (800.769.3766).
 
BLACK RIVER ELECTRIC COOPERATIVE:
Outages can be reported on the mobile app or call 1-844-431-BREC (2732).

Thursday, September 29, 2022, 4PM -

Due to the threat of inclement weather, all City of Sumter Administrative Offices will be closed on Friday, September 30, 2022.

Additionally, all City sanitation services will be canceled on Friday. There will be no yard debris or cardboard pickup on Friday or Saturday. All Friday commercial and residential customers will have a makeup day on Saturday, October 1. All Friday customers please place your cans out by the curb by 7AM on Saturday for pickup service.

All parks in the City of Sumter are officially closed and will remain closed until the hazardous weather outlook for the area has passed.

High winds and rainfall are expected all day Friday as Tropical Storm Ian passes through the Sumter area. Sustained winds could reach 35MPH and rainfall could reach 4-8 inches.

Residents should keep an eye on their surroundings and be prepared to take action if flooding occurs. If you encounter road blockages or high water on the roads, please call 803-436-2558. In case of an emergency, call 911.

The Sumter area is now under a Tropical Storm Warning, which means worsening conditions locally -- such as damaging winds, heavy rainfall, possible flooding -- are expected as Hurricane Ian moves into South Carolina.

Team Sumter agencies continue to monitor Hurricane Ian and its possible impacts on our area, along with emergency management agencies across the state.
City crews are also currently working in all areas of the city to prepare as best as possible for the storm.
