Curfew in effect at midnight, Sumter School District closed for the remainder of the week
UPDATE, OCTOBER 7, 7 PM: City of Sumter and Sumter County will continue the 12 Midnight thru 7 AM curfew, until Saturday morning.
UPDATE 6:45 PM: City of Sumter City Council has extended the curfew through Saturday morning. Each night curfew will be in effect from 12 Midnight to 7 am.
SUMTER, SC (Oct. 6, 2015) – A curfew for all of Sumter County will be in place beginning at midnight tonight and lasting until 7 a.m. Wednesday, while public schools in the Sumter School District will remain closed for the remainder of the week.
The decision to keep public schools closed comes out of concern for school buses operating on the county’s damaged road system.
As conditions have improved, several previously closed roads in Sumter County have since been reopened, however motorists are still advised to use caution while travelling. There remains a possibility that roads previously open could be closed at a later time as conditions warrant.
Meanwhile, the emergency shelter at Birnie Hope Center on South Purdy Street in Sumter will remain open tonight. The initial emergency shelter at Sumter High School has been closed as demand for emergency shelter services has dwindled.
City and county administrative offices are scheduled to open at 10 a.m. Wednesday.
The boil water advisory for customers on the City of Sumter water system remains in effect, while trash pickup services will resume on Wednesday. The Sumter County Recycling Centers will also reopen Wednesday.
Local officials are also continuing to gather data to assess the impact flood waters have had throughout Sumter County. As part of this effort, local officials are scheduled to meet with officials from the Federal Emergency Management Agency on Wednesday
