This morning, April 28, 2025, the City of Sumter marked another exciting milestone in its ongoing growth with the groundbreaking of the Broad Street Midway Trailhead — a strategic investment in infrastructure designed to enhance access and beautify the green space along Broad Street near the Prisma Health Shot Pouch Greenway.
Also announced this morning was the naming of the upcoming Joseph T. McElveen, Jr. Park, honoring the legacy of a longtime public servant in the Sumter community. Joseph T. McElveen, Jr., who was in attendance for today's event, served as Sumter's mayor for a remarkable 20 years. As mayor, he was a passionate advocate for the development of the city’s green spaces, including the creation of Sumter's first Greenway. This new park, which will be located just off the Broad Street entrance to the Prisma Health Shot Pouch Greenway, will serve as a tribute to Mayor McElveen's devotion to enhancing the quality of life for Sumter residents through outdoor spaces and recreation.
Directly across from the new playground, a dedicated food truck court will be established—a paved space where local food vendors can set up and serve their specialties, bringing fresh flavors and a lively atmosphere to the center of this bustling community space.
These projects are made possible in part through the Penny for Progress initiative. We also extend our heartfelt thanks to the Sumter delegation, led by Speaker Murrell Smith, Senator Jeff Zell, Senator Jeffery Graham, and Representative J. David Weeks, for their invaluable support in helping move our community forward!
