  • The City of Sumter was highlighted in a recent report by the US Conference of Mayors as a City that is taking proactive strides to further strengthen police-community relations. News of the City’s August 4 ‘Sumter United’ event where law enforcement officials, civic and church leaders and elected officials came together to discuss Sumter’s future made headlines and garnered the attention of the USCOM. Sumter is one of 49 cities across the nation that is actively working with the USCOM on strengthening communities ties through their police departments.

 

  • Free Smoke Detector Program through the Sumter Fire Department. Are you protecting your home from threat of fire? Contact the Sumter Fire Department and firefighters will supply and install smoke detector(s) in your home free of charge.

  • City Water Assistance Program Brings Neighborhoods Together. Your donation can be as small or as large as you can afford. Please donate today. Your donation will be placed into a designated fund and managed by the United Ministries of Sumter County to assist City Residents that are in need of a little extra help in paying their water bill. Donation options are available and include a one-time donation option, a bill roundup option or choose a reoccurring dollar amount. Every cent counts.

 

  • Help Preserve the Opera House History by Sharing Your Stories and Memorabilia. The historic Sumter Opera House needs you to help. Join us for Artifact Day, Wednesday, August 24 from 8:30 AM to 5 PM at the City Centre, 21 N. Main Street.  Share your stories on camera or bring your old photos, programs or other historical items from the Sumter Opera House to be scanned or photographed. All items will return to owner. Whether they are prized heirlooms or just old junk; your artifacts will help tell the story of our unique region and turn the theatre's storied past into the future.   • On Thursday, August 25, local historian Sammy Way will present two seminars on the Sumter Opera House.  The lectures will be given at 1:00 pm and 6:30 pm, both are free to the general public. Mr. Way will have photographs on display in the City Centre and will provide historical stories on a variety of topics about the diverse history of the Sumter Opera House.

 

  • The full 2016-17 Sumter Opera House season will be announced on Monday, August 22. While we don’t want to spoil the announcement we can give you a sneak peek at some of the extraordinary talent coming to the stage… established artists such as Doobie Brother John Cowan, country superstars John Berry and Pam Tillis, local artist and songwriter Patrick Davis and the Legendary Soul Stirrers. All are anticipated to be sell-out crowds when they take the stage, so don’t wait to buy your tickets or you will miss some great performances.
