History

Birnie HOPE Park, located at 210 S. Purdy Street in Sumter, South Carolina, is a cornerstone of the Birnie neighborhood—a historically African American community known for its rich heritage and close-knit residents. The park and community center is named in honor of Dr. Charles Wainwright Birnie, the first Black physician in Sumter, who served the community during the early 20th century. His legacy of service and empowerment continues through the park and center's mission to "Harvest Opportunity and Promote Empowerment" (HOPE) for all residents. 1

Encompassing 4.3 acres, Birnie HOPE Park offers a variety of amenities designed to cater to the community's needs:

  • A quarter-mile asphalt walking trail
  • Three playgrounds suitable for different age groups
  • A splash pad for water play during warmer months
  • A gazebo for gatherings and events
  • Restroom facilities
  • Landscaped green spaces for relaxation and activities

These features provide a safe and engaging environment for children, families, and seniors to enjoy outdoor activities. 2

The Birnie HOPE Center offers a range of programs aimed at community enrichment:
