SUMTER, SC – On Tuesday, June 10, 2025, the City of Sumter officially cut the ribbon on the renovation of South Sumter Park, marking the completion of a significant community investment that enhances recreational opportunities for residents of all ages and abilities.
The improvement project features substantial new additions, including two full-size basketball courts housed within a new “airnasium," dedicated fenced pickleball courts, and age-specific playground structures. Additional amenities include a new pavilion with restroom facilities, an enhanced walking trail covering approximately .25 miles, expanded sidewalk access, and an updated parking area. The park also features a new outdoor water fountain with a bottle-filling station located near the pavilion and the playground to serve active park users.
The renovation extends beyond recreational facilities to include a renovation of the baseball field, decorative wrought iron and brick fencing encompassing the entire city block, and landscaping improvements featuring new benches and expanded picnic areas. Popular existing amenities, including the splash pad and indoor gymnasium, have been preserved and integrated into the enhanced park design.
The ceremony featured remarks from distinguished guests, including State Representative David Weeks and House Speaker Murrell Smith, along with Mayor David Merchant and Councilman Calvin Hastie, who emphasized both the historical importance and contemporary value of South Sumter Park to the community.
Members of the South Sumter Neighborhood Beautification Association were among the attendees who participated in the ribbon cutting and were the first to experience the park's new amenities following the ceremony.
The renovated South Sumter Park is now open to the public and available for community use.
