Safe Streets for Sumter

Firefighters loading ambulanceOn Average, Every week in Sumter County, someone dies or is seriously injured in a crash on our streets.

WE NEED YOUR HELP TO CHANGE THIS.

Team Sumter is working on a Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) Safety Action Plan to eliminate traffic deaths and serious injuries.

This Safety Action Plan will identify the most significant street safety concerns in the community and strategies to address safety issues aimed at eliminating serious injury and fatal crashes affecting all roadway users.

The Action Plan is the first step toward implementing safety improvements with federal funding from the Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) program, and your experiences matter. Whether you walk, bike, drive, or ride transit, we need your input.

PROJECT OVERVIEW

The Safety Action Plan (SAP) is Sumter’s comprehensive vision to create a safe, accessible, and equitable experience for traveling in and around Sumter. The goal of this plan is to prioritize and justify the investment of safety improvements that prevent injuries and save lives along our public roadways. The SAP's development is supported by the Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) initiative which is a grant program established by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL). Once complete, this Safety Action Plan will allow Sumter to apply for implementation grant funding to implement the plan through SS4A.

To qualify for SS4A funding, each Safety Action Plan must meet specific criteria outlined in the program’s eligibility checklist. A successful SS4A project includes:

  • Safety Analysis
  • Planning Structure
  • Leadership Commitment and Goal Setting
  • Engagement and Collaboration
  • Progress and Transparency
  • Strategy and Project Selection
  • Policy and Process Changes

THE SAFE SYSTEM APPROACHSafe System Approach Graphic

The Safe System Approach to roadway safety is Federal Highway Administration’s (FHWA) initiative to achieve Vision Zero – Zero deaths on our roadways. This Safety Action Plan (SAP) will identify the most significant roadway safety concerns in Sumter and strategies to address safety issues aimed at reducing and eliminating serious injury and fatal crashes affecting all roadway users.

What are we accomplishing with this Plan?

  1. Identifying safety issues and specific actions that can be implemented to improve safety by reducing and eliminating serious injuries and fatal crashes on the City’s roadways
  2. Understanding the community’s safety needs through robust and collaborative public engagement activities.
  3. Providing priorities and recommendations to improve experiences for all roadway users, and, in turn creating a more attractive, accessible, safe, and healthy community.
  4. Designing a roadmap that will allow the City to apply for discretionary grant funds to implement and construct these proposed improvements.

Together, these elements form the foundation of a proactive, data-driven approach to making Sumter’s streets safer for everyone.
