A Historic Downtown Treasure Since 1919
History
Memorial Park was established in 1919 to honor 22 of Sumter's servicemen who fought and died in World War I.1 The park is located in the heart of Sumter's Historical District. The land was purchased and donated to the city in perpetuity by 37 individuals. occupies a prominent block in downtown Sumter and quickly became a central gathering place for the community.2
Julia Lester Dillon’s Role
Noted landscape architect Julia Lester Dillon was commissioned to design Memorial Park in 1920.3 Dillon, one of the first prominent female landscape architects in the South, shaped the park's original layout and plantings. Her vision emphasized beauty, open spaces, and honoring those who served. Dillon later became Sumter’s Superintendent of Parks and Trees (1928–1948), overseeing all city landscapes, and established a rule that no tree could be removed without her approval.4
Recent and Current Improvements
In February 2025, a new inclusive playground was opened at Memorial Park. The playground features accessible equipment for children of all abilities and fitness stations for adults, encouraging multi-generational use.5 The City of Sumter also approved renovations to the park’s restroom facilities.2
Legacy and Community Importance
Today, Memorial Park continues to serve as a central venue for remembrance, recreation, and community gatherings.
