WINTER WEATHER UPDATE


Out of an abundance of caution due to the approaching winter storm, all City of Sumter parks and gardens, along with the Palmetto Tennis Center, will be closed on Sunday, January 25, 2026.

Sanitation Service Notice & Storm Preparedness

City Administration is closely monitoring the approaching storm in coordination with Sumter County Emergency Management. Due to anticipated inclement weather this weekend, sanitation services may be delayed or temporarily halted on Monday if conditions become unsafe. Crews will resume service as soon as it is safe to do so.

Residents are encouraged to secure carts and remain patient during this time. Those who must be on the roads are asked to slow down and take extra precautions to help keep both the public and city crews and safety professionals safe. Updates will be shared as conditions warrant.

Power Outage Reporting & Resources

In the event of weather-related power outages, residents should contact their electric provider directly using the information below.

Duke Energy

Customers served by Duke Energy can report outages and receive updates using the following methods:

Report an Outage

  • Text OUT to 57801
  • Call 800.769.3766 (800-POWERON) to report an outage or electrical emergency
  • Duke Energy Progress customers may also call 800.419.6356
  • Use the Duke Energy mobile app to report outages, check restoration status, and receive alerts

Safety Reminder
If you see a downed or sparking power line, do not approach it. Call Duke Energy immediately or dial 911.

 

Black River Electric Cooperative

Customers served by Black River Electric Cooperative should use the following contact numbers to report outages:

  • Call 803.469.8060 during normal business hours
  • After hours or on weekends, call 1.844.431.2732

When reporting an outage, customers should be prepared to provide the name on the account, service address, and a contact phone number.

 

Emergency Shelter Information

Residents in need of a safe place to stay during the storm may utilize the following resource:

Sumter United Ministries Emergency Shelter
The shelter operates overnight from 7:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. and provides protection from the elements and basic support services. Availability may depend on weather conditions and capacity, so arriving early is encouraged.

 

Stay Safe & Stay Informed

Residents are encouraged to:

  • Secure outdoor items that could become hazards in high winds
  • Charge phones and essential devices ahead of time
  • Have flashlights and basic supplies available
