Code Compliance & Enforcement

The Fire Marshal enforces the fire codes and ordinances adopted by the City of Sumter, including requirements derived from the International Fire Code (IFC) and applicable National Fire Protection Association (NFPA)(opens in a new tab) standards. Code enforcement promotes consistent fire-safety practices across commercial and public occupancies.

Responsibilities include:

• Reviewing fire-code compliance during inspections
• Verifying proper storage and handling of hazardous materials
• Addressing violations through notices, corrective actions, and follow-up inspections
• Providing guidance to business owners and contractors regarding code requirements
