City of Sumter Announces Improvements at Swan Lake Iris Gardens

Publish Date
2nd December 2025

The City of Sumter is moving forward with two planned improvement projects at Swan Lake Iris Gardens: the Sister Wimberly Playground renovation and the North Entrance renovation.

The Sister Wimberly Playground project includes replacing outdated equipment with modern, nature-inspired, inclusive play structures designed for children of all ages and abilities. This will be the first major playground renovation at Swan Lake since the 1970s.

The North Entrance renovation will update the Gardens’ northern gateway with new brick and concrete walkways, erosion control measures, refreshed planting and irrigation, and refurbishment of the existing brick and stone columns, steel gates, and fencing.

Construction for both projects is scheduled to begin in early 2026 and is expected to take approximately 260 days. During this time, some areas of the Gardens may be temporarily inaccessible.

Visitors and residents are asked to be patient and understanding while these improvements are underway. The work is designed to enhance safety, accessibility, and the overall experience for everyone who enjoys Swan Lake Iris Gardens.
