Water Assistance Program

In 2012, a local resident with special needs struggled to pay his water bill on time each month. His support check always arrived after the bill was due, making it nearly impossible to stay current. City employees came together and paid his bill for one month — giving him the small boost he needed to get back on track.

From this act of kindness, the Water Assistance Program was born.

The City of Sumter created this program to help residents facing temporary financial hardship. In partnership with Sumter United Ministries, the program provides short-term utility assistance to eligible individuals. Donations collected through the City are transferred to Sumter United Ministries, which carefully screens and counsels each applicant before granting aid.

This partnership ensures that help is provided with dignity, accountability, and care — neighbors helping neighbors when it’s needed most.

To date, the fund had collected over $15,000 — and participation continues to grow. Every contribution, no matter the size, helps strengthen our community.

How to Donate

All donations are tax-deductible and go directly toward helping local families in need. There are three simple ways to contribute:

  1. One-Time Donation
Add any amount to your regular monthly water bill. You can make a one-time donation whenever you choose.
  2. Auto Round-Up
Enroll in the “Round-Up” option and automatically round your bill to the nearest dollar each month.
    Example: A $40.75 bill becomes $41.00 — donating $0.25 monthly.
  3. Recurring Monthly Donation
Choose a set amount (e.g., $1, $5, or $10) to be added to your bill each month. Simply complete the Online Donation Form to start your recurring gift.
