SC7 Expedition Brings Two Days of Outdoor Fun to Sumter County

June 26, 2025 SUMTER, SC – Lace up your hiking boots and grab your paddles — the SC7 Expedition is coming through Sumter County, and everyone is invited to take part in a two-day adventure that celebrates the natural beauty of our region.

On Wednesday, July 16, the expedition will kick off with a morning hike at Poinsett State Park in Wedgefield. Participants will enjoy an approximately 3.5-mile guided walk through one of South Carolina’s most ecologically diverse parks. Poinsett blends mountain laurels and hardwood forests with swampland and sandy trails, offering visitors a unique experience that feels worlds away from everyday life. The hike begins at 9:00 a.m. and is expected to wrap up around 11:30 a.m.

Later that afternoon, SC7 will reconvene in downtown Sumter for a second walk beginning at 2:00 p.m. This walk covers about 2.25 miles around Swan Lake and along the Prisma Health Shot Pouch Greenway, starting from the Heath Pavilion on Garden Street. This part of the route features peaceful, shaded paths winding beside the water, with opportunities to spot local wildlife and enjoy scenic lake views. The walk will discuss local conservation efforts and the community's environmental stewardship.

On Thursday, July 17, the expedition shifts to the water for a morning paddle through the stunning Sparkleberry Swamp. Known for its towering cypress trees and mirror-like blackwater, Sparkleberry is one of South Carolina’s hidden natural gems. Paddlers will launch from Sparkleberry Landing in Rimini, just off Lake Marion, at 9:00 a.m. and return by noon. It’s a great opportunity to enjoy one of the state’s most photographed and biodiverse swamp systems. Please note that participants need to bring their own canoe or kayak, although a limited number of rentals are available through Coastal Expeditions (details at www.coastalexpeditions.com under “Tours & Trips”).

This two-day stretch of the SC7 Expedition is a chance for locals and visitors alike to get outside, explore some of the region’s most beautiful landscapes, and connect with fellow nature lovers. Whether you're in it for the hiking, the paddling, environmental education, or just the fresh air, there's something for everyone.

No registration is required, but participants should come prepared with water, sunscreen, comfortable footwear, and bug spray. These events are suitable for all ages, though younger children may need extra support during the hikes or paddle.

Join us and see what makes Sumter County such a special place to explore — from forest trails to swampy backwaters, it’s all right here in our backyard.
