City To Host Curbside Junk Removal Program In January 2024

JANUARY 25 UPDATE:

Due to the high volume of participation, we are extending our contract with the removal company to ensure that the junk piles are collected into next week. Please be patient and leave your items by the curb. Residents who couldn't get their piles out by January 21, please refrain from adding anything new. Unfortunately, we cannot guarantee the collection of any additional items.

SUMTER, SC (December 6, 2023) - The City of Sumter is helping its citizens prepare for a common New Year's resolution. De-cluttering creates a sense of calm and organization and is often a goal for many homes as the year turns over. To get a head start and increase your chances of success, it’s time to start planning for a home cleanup.

For the week of January 22-26, 2024, the City of Sumter will be hosting a free, one-time residential Curbside Junk Removal service. Residents of the City of Sumter are allowed to place large, unwanted items at their curb for collection. All items must be sorted into specific piles by Sunday, January 21st. This initiative provides an opportunity for residents to dispose of items that are too large or bulky for regular trash collection.

“It’s important that we love where we live and keep Sumter clean,” stated Mayor David Merchant, “and this is yet another way for us to offer our resources and hopefully alleviate massive dumping grounds in our city.”

During this initiative, residents can place items such as furniture, appliances, mattresses, and other household items at the curb. Guidelines have been provided on their website, such as placing items neatly and safely at the curb, separating different types of items, and ensuring that hazardous materials or prohibited items are not included.
