City of Sumter Announced as 2021 All-America City Finalist

SUMTER, SC (March 16, 2021) – The City of Sumter has been named one of 20 finalists nationwide for the 2021 All-America City Awards.

"This year’s finalist communities have managed the compounding difficulties of the past year, all while building equity and resilience,” stated Doug Linkhart. “Their accomplishments are a testament to what can be achieved when government, residents, businesses and other stakeholders collaborate."

The All-America City Awards is the flagship program of the National Civic League. Its spotlight this year was ‘Building Equitable and Resilient Communities.’ The award, given to 10 communities each year since 1949, celebrates and recognizes villages, towns, cities, counties, tribes and regions that engage residents in innovative, inclusive and effective efforts to tackle critical challenges.

“The City’s 2021 application highlights collaborative programs and partners all around our community,” stated David Merchant, Mayor of City of Sumter. “We focused on areas such as COVID-19 response, flood recovery, proactive community policing, economic flexibility through STEM/STEAM programs and housing.

The finalist communities will compete in virtual presentations this June to be recognized as one of ten All-America Cities for 2021.
