City of Sumter Celebrates Ribbon Cutting for Westend Park

Sumter, SC — The City of Sumter officially celebrated the ribbon cutting of Westend Park (formerly Oakland Park) this morning with community members and leaders in attendance.

Mayor David Merchant, Mayor Pro Tem James Blassingame, Representative David Weeks, and South Carolina Speaker of the House Murrell Smith spoke at the event, highlighting its significance for the community. Councilman Calvin Hastie joined residents of the Westend neighborhood in the crowd to celebrate this important milestone.

Phase one has been completed, bringing two full basketball courts, a walking path, a community garden, field space for play and relaxation, creating a welcoming space for families, recreation, and neighborhood gatherings to the revitalized park.

The renaming and renovation of the park reflect the city’s ongoing investment in community spaces that promote health, wellness, and togetherness. Local residents, civic leaders, and elected officials celebrated the project as a major step in supporting the vibrancy of the Westend community.

These exciting renovations mark the first phase of the park’s upgrades. Phase two will bring restrooms, new playground equipment, and a covered picnic area. Stay tuned for more updates as this project continues to take shape.
