The City of Sumter has approved a major investment in the Downtown Water Improvements 2025 Project, funded entirely through state grant dollars. This initiative will upgrade essential water infrastructure throughout the downtown and historic district areas, where many of the existing water lines are aging and increasingly prone to breaks, leaks, and other service issues.
Strengthening our water system is critical for public health, safety, and the long-term vitality of the community. The improvements will enhance the reliability of drinking water delivery, reduce the likelihood of emergency repairs, and improve fire protection capabilities for both residential and commercial properties. In the historic district, where older underground utilities can threaten the preservation of longstanding structures, these upgrades are especially important.
Work will cover multiple streets, including water-line replacement along segments from Washington to Purdy, Broad to Liberty, Warren Street, Guignard to Blanding, and a portion of North Main Street. Construction will begin in January, and is expected to last approximately 6-8 months. As the project progresses, residents, businesses, and visitors should anticipate periodic traffic delays, lane closures, and temporary detours. While these disruptions may be inconvenient, they are a necessary part of ensuring a stronger and more dependable water system for the future.
This project reflects the city’s commitment to proactive infrastructure planning, responsible use of grant funding, and improving quality of life for all who live, work, and spend time in Sumter.
