Vietnam Traveling Memorial Wall

 

The City of Sumter is proud to announce that he 2013 Iris Festival will feature the Vietnam Traveling Memorial Wall. The wall will be at Swan Lake beginning with an opening ceremony at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, May 24 to the evening of Monday, May 27.

The wall, which is a 3/5 scale of the Vietnam Memorial in Washington, D.C., will stretch from the Iris Market toward W. Liberty Street. The wall stands six feet tall at the center and covers almost 300 feet.

The Traveling Memorial Wall stands as a reminder of the great sacrifices made during the Vietname War. It was made for the purpose of helping to heal and rekindle friendships and to allow people to opportunity to visit loved ones in their hometown, who otherwise may not be able to make the trip to the nation's capital.

The wall will be open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. each day. Shuttles from the Fair Grounds will be running on Saturday and Sunday during festival hours, while there will be limited handicap parking at Swan Lake.
