The Sumter Urban Area Transportation Study (SUATS) is the Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) designated for the urbanized area of Sumter County. The MPO is the Planning organization for the expenditure of Federal and State matching highway within the designated area in the County. The MPO is made up of its Planning Staff, Policy Committee, and Study Team. The Staff provides assistance and recommendations to the Policy Committee with SCDOT and Federal Highway Administration support. The Policy Committee is a ten member body composed of representatives from Sumter City Council, County Council, Legislation Delegation, Planning Commission, Economic Development Board, and County Transportation Committee. Currently, SUATS receives approximately $2.4 million from the federal government each year. The Policy Committee and Study Team meet on an as needed basis in the City Council Chambers located on the 4th floor of the Opera House at 21 N. Main Street.
