Welcome to the Sumter Shaw Family. As you arrive in our community you will soon discover that the people of Sumter have great patriotic pride in supporting the base mission, military personnel and their families, with an overwhelming display of support for deployed personnel and their families.
Base personnel return that support to the community through their unselfish work to improve the quality of education, medical care, spiritual life and humanitarian activities.
Shaw Air Force Base, located approximately ten miles west of Sumter is home to the Air Force's largest combat F-16 wing -- the 20th Fighter Wing -- whose mission is to provide, project and sustain combat-ready air forces. Shaw also serves as home to Headquarters Ninth Air Force and U.S. Air Forces Central (USAFCENT), whose primary mission is to project decisive air and space power for U.S. Central Command (USCENTCOM) and America. As of August 2011, Shaw AFB is home to Third Army Headquarters. Their team must accomplish the missions given by USCENTCOM and the US Army, as well as answer the legal requirements of forces currently committed in theater.
The Air Force also has more than three dozen field operating agencies and direct reporting units which directly support the mission by providing unique services.
The Shaw Sumter Family... welcome you and yours to the Sumter community!
