For more than a century, the bicycle has been an important part of the lives of most Americans and millions of Americans engage in bicycling because it provides quality family recreation. The education of cyclists and motorists as to the proper and safe operation of bicycles is important to ensure the safety and comfort of all users and bicycling is valuable as a means of daily transportation, as well as exercise. Bicycling is important in meeting the Sumter community’s goal of becoming a greener and healthier community with a superior quality of life.

May is National Bike Month.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT  I,  Joseph T. McElveen, Jr., Mayor of the City of Sumter, do hereby proclaim May 12 – 16,  2008 as

"NATIONAL BIKE WEEK”

in the

CITY OF SUMTER

and call upon all Sumter citizens to help promote May 16, 2008 as “Ride Your Bike To Work Day” and encourage Sumter County businesses, agencies, and organizations to support employees who ride their bike to work on Friday, May 16.
