June 6-12, 2010

PROCLAMATION
"NATIONAL GARDEN WEEK”
The week of June 6-12, 2010 is recognized as National Garden Week, with the theme of: “The World Around Us, Love It- Beautify It-Protect It”, and the motto of: “A Force for Good”. Gardeners have a passion for nurturing the resources of the earth through the planting of seeds and the care of plants. Gardeners seek to add beauty, fragrance and nutrition to our lives through the growing of herbs, vegetables, foliage and flowers. Gardening furnishes a challenging and productive activity for many citizens. Gardening allows members of garden clubs across the nation and throughout the world to serve others in the communities in which they live and work. There are three federated Garden Clubs in Sumter, all of which are members of the Sumter Council of Garden Clubs. The Sumter Council of Garden Clubs supports and maintains the Alice Boyle Garden Center and grounds. The Sumter Council of Garden Clubs provides educational programs, promotes civic beauty, and sponsors tours and flower shows for the community to enjoy.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that I, Joseph T. McElveen, Jr., Mayor of the City of Sumter, do hereby proclaim June 6 – 12, 2010 as
"NATIONAL GARDEN WEEK”
in the
CITY OF SUMTER
and urge the citizens of this community to join me acknowledging the importance of gardening and the numerous contributions of gardeners in the Sumter Community.
Joseph T. McElveen, Jr., Mayor
