PROCLAMATION
"INTERNATIONAL GIRL EFFECT WEEK"
The Girl Effect concept was created in 2010 by the Nike Foundation, and aids impoverished girls in our communities and around the world through various forms of empowerment. Discrimination against girls is still very pronounced in the developing world, as there are at least 70% of 130 million out of school children that are girls. The overall purpose of the week is to show individuals that regardless of your location, if given the chance, and driven by goals, one can become a successful individual in their community and the world. The week encourages all participants to grasp their opportunities by setting 7-day SMART life goals to reach their potential, resulting in bettering our local, national and international communities. The SMART acronym life goals (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Time), bound with daily objectives target the following areas:
Day 1 – Health and Physical Well-being
Day 2 – Career
Day 3 – Financial
Day 4 – Relationship
Day 5 – Spiritual
Day 6 – Leisure
Day 7 – Societal
For each goal established, participants are encouraged to learn about the needs of girls throughout the world and act by donating to the Girl Effect Fund or by volunteering with a worthy cause for girls.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT I, Joseph T. McElveen, Jr., Mayor of the City of Sumter, do hereby proclaim the week of November 21 - 27, 2011 as:
“INTERNATIONAL GIRL EFFECT WEEK”
in the
CITY OF SUMTER
and I do hereby encourage all citizens to join me in working together to make a difference by creating positive change within our lives and the world – one girl at a time.
