Doug Mathis

Assistant Fire Chief of County Operations


Doug joined the Fire Service out of high school in 1972, hired by then Public Safety Director Leslie Griffin.  Given the choice of Fire or Law Enforcement, Doug chose the Fire Service and has never looked back.   Doug retired as Fire Chief with 30 years of service to the City.  Shortly after retiring Doug was asked to return to serve as Assistant Fire Chief over County Operations, where he continues to serve.


Doug was appointed as one of the first of five Master Firefighters in the Sumter Fire Department.  Doug served as Lead Arson Investigator in the joint operations of Sumter Police, Sheriff and Fire Department.   He earned Associate Degrees in Fire Science and Criminal Justice.  He also attended the Fire Officers program at the National Fire Academy.   Doug holds many certifications, both in fire and law enforcement.


Doug is a member of the S.C. State Firemen’s Association, The S.C. State Fire Chief’s Association (served on the Finance Committee for two years), and The International Association of Fire Chiefs.   He is a member of Grace Baptist Church.
