When visiting Sumter, you find yourself in a city of approximately 45,000 citizens who love living here. You may even decide to call Sumter home, as so many of our citizens have chosen to do through relocation, retirement or assignments.
Sumter county's approximately 108,000 citizens arrived through heritage, Shaw Air Force Base, a large industrial base, and retirees looking for a pleasing year-round climate and convenient location to all the Carolinas have to offer. Sumter is centrally located, only a 90 minute drive to the state's beautiful beaches and a short three-hour drive to the Blue Ridge Mountains. Sumter is the 8th largest city in South Carolina and truly is in the middle of everything!
Welcome to Sumter! I'm Susan Wild, the City Communications, Tourism & Recreation Director. We welcome you to our city website and invite you to take a tour of our community. Tourism, retirees and relocation are a large percentage of our population, and we invite you to join us!
Sumter Smiles Back! Each day approximately 2,000 visitors here in Sumter see the smiling faces throughout our community. More than 900,000 visitors pass through Sumter annually as tourists and we may never know who they are. The tourism industry is powerful in Sumter, with a more than 70 million dollar economic impact reported in 2009. The Sumter tourism industry has more than doubled within the past 10 years and produced nearly 800 tourism-related jobs with an annual payroll of more than 12 million dollars. Sumter Smiles Back each and every day to out-of-town visitors from across the nation and around the world. From one smile to another… Sumter Smiles Back and tourists experience the real Sumter, South Carolina.
