The City of Sumter's Palmetto Tennis Center will host the 2015 USTA/ITA National Small College Championships from Oct. 15-18, marking the second straight year the prestigious event will be held in Sumter.
“The USTA/ITA National Small College Championships are one of collegiate athletics' most unique events,” said ITA CEO Tim Russell. “We are honored and delighted that these prestigious events will be played in such a wonderful community at such an amazing facility – home of outstanding junior and professional tennis tournaments.”
Dating back to 1986, these events are the only individual national championship event for singles and doubles for NCAA Division II and NAIA levels. The tournament is also the only event during the collegiate calendar to combine all levels of Junior/Community College tennis (NJCAA Divisions I and III, along with the California division). Over 8,000 student-athletes from NCAA Divisions I, II, III, NAIA and Junior/Community Colleges compete in the USTA/ITA Regional Championships held at over 80 different college campuses across the country.
Each division sends eight singles players and eight doubles pairs to the national event, with spots earned by winning USTA/ITA Regional Championships or via at-large selections.
The tournament concludes with the singles and doubles champions of each division competing in comprehensive draws to determine “Super Bowl” champions. The four titlists receive entry into the 2015 USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships, which is set for November 12-15 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, NY.
